Recorded at Voodoo Girl and Tractor Brewery in Albuquerque, NM in early 2023-ish, unless it was somewhere else.
Karaoke saved my life this year.
With my marriage in shambles and my mother recently committed to 24-hour memory care, I desperately needed to find something to help me stay together. So, I turned to a new hobby. It got me out of the house. It took me away from my abuser. I made new friends. I found my confidence again.
Fun, and more than fun. Life.
Karaoke.
I haven't always played kazoo, though I am quickly recognized for it now. In fact, on the first track, I am surrounded by Warlock, DJ Eyes, and Colin, each of whom is playing an inflatable guitar or somesuch. The kazoo was my innovation to this power band performance. After this performance and with DJEyes's encouragement, I was absolutely sold on kazoo's power and subtlety as a musical amplification of vital human concerns.
Tracks are cut to evoke the bar space and casual conversations that actually take place during the shows. As with everything about the karaoke scene, the tracks sound a little ramshackle. That's because they were recorded by a phone on a table. I love the sense of time and space I get from these janky mono recordings.
Please, enjoy.
